A Quick Retort
The story of how an Anglo-Indian girl was too quick-witted for an American is told by Mr J. Calder, who spent many years in India. Just after the Russians had made .their heroic stand at Stalingrad, an American boarded a crowded tram in Calcutta, He could not find a seat, so drawled in a nasal accent, “Wall, I’ve come right across the world to win the war for you, and I can’t even get a seat.” Whereupon a young girl jumped up and- said: “I’m so sorry, I didn’t recognise your Russian accent; take mine.”
