IMPORTED TIMBER
CANADIAN AND AMERICAN FIRST SHIPMENT ON WAY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The first shipment of a large consignment of building timber from the United States and Canada is en route to New Zealand. In all more than 28,000,000 board feet of Oregon, western red cedar and American redwood had been ordered with the consent of the New Zealand Government, and regular shipments are expected to follow the first delivery.
. The decision to make the purchase was reached after discussions between the New Zealand Timber Merchants Federation and the State Forest Service. The Government authorised the issue to the federation of a licence to import more than 28,000,000 feet of Canadian and United States timber. The value of the licence is expected to exceed £5,000,000, New Zealand currency. First' supplies are expected to reach the Dominion within a few weeks.
The timber ordered includes 15,000,000 board feet of Oregon, 2,000,000 feei of western red cedar, 5,000,000 feet of redwood and a quantity of American sugar pine.
This 1 imported timber will help considerably in relieving the demand for high-class joinery timbers, allowing New Zealand timbers, which now go into joinery, to be used for other building purposes..
