POLICE FAREWELL
ASHBURTON MEN HONOURED Occasion was taken yesterday by members of the local Police Force, the Court staff and the Traffic Department to bid farewell to two departing members, Constables K. A. Speak and A. Grant. Constable Grant, who has been stationed at. Ashburton for about three years, left to-day for Christchurch and there takes over duties as Sergeant, beginning to-morrow. Constable Speak has been at the Ashburton station for about eight years, and is now on retiring leave. He resigned recently and leaves on Monday for Waitaha, West Coast, where he has purchased a dairy farm. Warm tributes to the popularity of both officers were paid by many speak ers at the ceremony yesterday, and ex-Senior-Sergeant J. F. Cleary on ’behalf of those present, presented each with a fountain pen, wishing, them every happiness and success in the future. The recipients suitably replied and the gathering terminated with musical honours and cheers for the departing officers.
