MAORI WOMAN’S BODY FOUND
NO SIGN OF VIOLENCE (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 2. The body of a middle-aged Maori woman was found caught in willows along the bank of the Wanganui River, five miles below Pipiriki, by the crew of the river boat Wahakapai, on Wednesday. The body was recovered by Captain A. Anderson and a passenger, Mr Y. Davy, and taken to Pipiriki. Medical examination revealed no sign of violence. From the condition of the body it is believed that death was caused by drowning about a week This evening the body was identified as that of Mrs Maata Tapuae, aged 62, a widow. She returned to Pipiriki recently after living for the last five years in Raetihi. She told her son, about three weeks ago, that she was going, back to Raetihi for a visit, and then on to Levin. For this reason no notice- was taken of her absence, and she was not reported missing.
