FREEDOM OF PRESS
KEY TO SUCCESS OF UNITED NATIONS (Rec. 9.80) NEW YORK. June 1. The former American Ambassador to Britain, Mr J. C. Winant, addressing the Economic and Social Council, described universal freedom of information and the Press as the key to a successful United Nations. He sharply disagreed with the contention that in favouring the creation of a sub-commission on this subject Mrs Roosevelt’s commission on human rights had tried to relegate to the background other fundamental freedoms. Mr P. J. Noel-Baker (Britain) suggested that there was immediate need for a conference of the Press about, the Press, the rules which the Press must follow and the protection the Press should have in the immediate future. He agreed that the proposal to insert clauses about human rights in peace treaties should not be adopted, but said a main principle should be drawn up before September. This might help the Powers! to put in treaties an obligation to observe fundamental human rights so that their people would realise they had an obligation toward the world at large in that regard.
