ADJUSTMENT OF SALES TAX

POSSIBLE SUBJECT IN NEXT SESSION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 31. A hint that the sales tax on building materials and on clothing and footwear will he adjusted during this session, of Parliament was given by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), replying to a deputation today from, 'the Dominion conference of the Returned Services' Association. The question of sales tax and excess profits tax on building materials had been mentioned by Mr C. .T. Tustin. He said that the principle of interest free loans should apply to building loans for former servicemen in excess of £1(500. Particularly in Wellington and Auckland, it was believed that more help should be given in the high-cost building areas. The Prime Minister said that tire whole question of building was being gone into, also the question whether the time had not arrived to adjust the sales tax on building and other materials. The session was coming on. Sales tax was certain to de discussed, and there was the question of sales tax on clothing, babies’ clothing, children’s clothing, boots., shoes, and building materials. These matters were being gone into.
