LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From_the “Guardian,” June 1, 1896) Acclimatisation Dinner; —The first of what is intended to be a seriesi of annual dinners in connection with the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society took place last evening at Devane’s Hotel. Between 20 and 30 gentlemen sat down to an excellent meal in which fish in various forms took a prominent place. Mr J. M. Cambridge presided. A long toast list was honoured and “Auld LaffS Syne” brought a most successful and enjoyable evening to a close. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the "Guardian,” June 1, 1921) Induction at Methven.—The induction took place at St. John's* Presbytei’ian Church, Methven, of the Rev. G. W. T. Hercus. Mr Hercus was formerly of Balfour, Southland. The service took place under encouraging auspices there being a good muster of the Presbytery and congregation. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. S. Morrison, Moderator of the Charge. The Rev. Milne, of Springburn, delivered an impressive sermon. The Rev. C. L. Sparrow, Anglican minister delivered a cordial speech of. welcome.
