DEBRIS ON ROADS
MAYFIELD REPRESENTATIONS COUNCIL REMEDYING. POSITION Mayfield district farmers have been experiencing trouble through the deposit of grading debris on the sides of roads, according to letters of protest received at, yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Ashburton County Council. Steps aie being taken by the council, however, to deal with the matter by obtaining special machinery and the issuing of instructions to grader drivers to break up turf. The following letter was received yesterday from Mid-Canterbury Federated Farmers’ Executive: “A protest was received from "the Mayfield branch dealing with the grading of large stories and rough turf on to the sides of roads in the Mayfield district. As a result of such action, the farmers find it difficult to control noxious weeds and nearly impossible to use mechanical hedge-cutters. A further result is. that the ‘watershed’ of the roads- is affected and, in wet weather, large pools of water collect along the sides of the roads.”
A letter on similar lines was received direct from the Mayfield Branch ot Federated Farmers, it also being pointed out that gorse along the council’s own property frontages was in k very uncontrolled state.
The .County; Clerk (Mr G. Kely) reported that, in reply to the Mayfield branch protest it had been advised that the council recognised the difficulty caused and was investigating the construction of machinery to deal with boulders and stones. Grader drivers had been instructed to break up and roll turf, while machinery had also been purchased to deal with reserve frontages. \ . , It was decided to forward a reply on similar lines to the Federated Farmer's’ District Executive.
