WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

ASHBURTON DISTRICT A talk by Mrs R. Rutherford, drama tutor, was given at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute, when it was agreed to commence classes in July.

A motion of sympathy with Mrs D. Fitzgerald in the loss of her father was carried in silence. A comprehensive report of the annual meeting of the federation was read by Mrs Amos. The Arts and Crafts Circle decided to commence meetings, to be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Mrs Sedcole spoke briefly on a. visit to the Women’s Institute headquarters in Wellington. Members were asked to support the Health Camp stall on Friday. The president (Mrs L. Ruddock) presided over a good attendance, one new member being weclomed. Competitions resulted: Chrysanthemums and autumn foliage, Mrs Kelly 1, Mrs Cairns 2, Mrs Bland 3; large flower, Mrs Cairns 1, Mrs Meredith 2, Mrs Bland 3; small flower, Mesdames Hayston and Gibson (equal) 1, Mesdames Johnstone and E. A. Amos (equal) 3, Mrs Aitken 5; truss or spike, Mrs Cairns 1, Mrs Kelly 2, Mrs Amos 3; beetroot, Mrs Bland 1, Mrs Amos 2, Mrs Walker 3; potatoes, Mrs Bland 1, Mrs Kelly 2, Mrs Johnstone 3; tomato sauce, Mrs Cairns 1, Mrs Meredith 2, Mrs Amos 3; scones, Mrs Cairns 1, Mrs J. T. Corbett 2, Mrs Johnstone 3; oven cloth, Mrs Roffey 1, Mrs Amos 2, Mesdames Joyce and Meredith (equal) 3.
