CZECH ELECTIONS

COMMUNISTS LEADING (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 2G. The first Czech General Election returns show a clear lead for the Communists, with Dr. Edouard Benes National Socialists second. . Progress results are: Communists 316,000, National Socialists 262,000, Social Democrats 127,000, Catholic People’s Party 97,000. Reuter’s Prague correspondent says that stringent precautions were taken to prevent abuses of Czechoslovakia’s first post-war elections. Voters selected ballot papers behind little screens, and polling proceeded with smooth, clock-work precision. Heavily veiled Carmelite nuns, who normally are

never alloAved, out of doors, were among the voters. As voting Avas compulsory, they left the convents by special permission in the company of novices.
