LONG PRICES AT OAMARU
EASTERN COIN AND KERWOOD BiNGEN ! * Surprisingly little support was extended to Eastern Coin in the Kurow Cup at. Oamaru on Saturday, and the Paper Money gelding went out 12tk favourite in a field of 13, to pay a dividend of over a third of a century. As he won the Oamaru Cup last month, and his last four starts, including that event, saw him finish third, second, first and fourth, this neglect on the part of the public is all the harder to understand. In Friday’s “Guardian,” Eastern Coin was indicated as the logical first favourite, while Kerwood Bingen (which paid nearly a quarter of a century—he was 10th in order of public fancy) was nominated as a probable second favourite. , Three other winners (all second fancies) were indicated, in addition to four seconds (including an Bth favourite) and one third (the 7th fancy of the public). Of the 20 actual starters mentioned in the “Guardian,” therefore, five were first, four second and one third. Dividends exceeding £34, £26, £24, £l2 and £ll were paid by winners at the Kurow meeting. No first horse returned as little as £4, says the “Timaru Herald.” Place dividends were correspondingly liberal, only four being less than £2. As a result the turnover for the day suffered considerably* Six Winners Indicated Of 23 actual starters, nominated in Friday’s “Guardian” as likely to be in public demand at the Metropolitan trots on Saturday, six were winners, two were second an<j, two were third. The winners included Believe Me, Miss J Cuff’s six-year-old trotter, trained at Hinds by T. D. Patterson, which was 8/9 in order of favouritism and paid a great, and surprisingly-good dividend. Aberhall, fifth fancy, was another winner nominated in the “Guardian.” Mae Wynne (third, favourite) was another which paid a good price.' Mister Johns Good Double Mister John, owned by Mr W. J. Robinson, of Ashburton, won the principal race, the Reefton Hack Handicap, at the Reefton meeting on Saturday, and did so in a manner which promises, still better things to come. A five-year-old gelding by Man’s Pal from Isabella, Mister John was wellsuited by the mile and a quarter journey He was well back in the early stages, and still not too well placed near the straight entrance, but then unwound a brilliant dash to win, going away, by an easy margin of four lengths. Yesterday Mister John repeated the performance, carrying 8.8; to victory in the County Hack Handicap and over the same distance as on Saturday. Following a third at Waimate the previous Saturday, Mister John was solidly backed at the recent Timaru meeting, but had no luck in the running and finished out of a place. Ashburton R.C. Nominations Nominations for all events at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting on May 4 close with the secretary, Mr J. B. Nicoll, at 8 o’clock to-morrow (Wednesday) evening.
reefton j.c. M. McCLINTOCK RIDES FOUR WINNERS (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, April 15. The Reefton Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was concluded to-day in fine sunny weather and before a fair attendance. The track was soft following week-end rain, but improved throughout the afternoon. The totalisator handled £7374 10s as against £8645 10s on the single day’s racing in 1943. The total for the two days was £15,133 10s. There were keen racing and improved fields compared with the opening day. Both open events were won in approved style by Pedantic who completed a treble for the meeting. Another to win a treble was the promising hack, Here Hine, while the pacer, Reckless Lady to-day Won a double and the successes of Mister John and Leeston gave each two wins for the meeting.
