RADAR EXPERIMENTS

SUN AND MILKY WAY " . (Rec. 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, March 27. Radar experiments were recently 'carried out on radio noises from the sun and the Milky Way. This was disclosed by the Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Sir Edward Appleton, who said that the radar equipment used was originally designed for detecting enemy planes. •• Echoes obtained from meteorite trails were received up to a range of 2000 miles, which “must constitute a record for the 'range of radar detection,” said Sir Edward Appleton. Ultra-short waves from the Milky Way which were the subject of experiments, reach the earth at appreciable strength after travelling 30,000 years. They were sometimes troublesome and were similar to those of sunspots, which take only eight minutes to reach the earth.
