LOSING HIS MEMORY

TOJO RELIES ON BOOKS TOKIO, March 26. Tojo the former Japanese Premier and war criminal is, according to the JcipunesG, losing* his memory, says 11m correspondent of the Associated Press. Questioned by American officials, Tojo said he could not recall dates and other important details of events during his period of office. He claimed that his amnesia was caused by his attempted suicide on. September 11, 1945. American officials believe that Tojo’s amnesia is feigned, but this is denied by Tojo’s principal defence lawyer, Dr. Ichiro Kiyose, who said Tojo’s memory was so bad that he relied on a series of notebooks, but the books were destroyed, presumably when the War Ministry was bombed. Dr. Kiyose added that when a man depends on notes as much as Tojo does, he is lost without them. The correspondent reports that Tojo is in good health and is quite calm, in contrast with his former depressed attitude, but he is convinced that he will never leave prison alive,
