WAR MEMORIALS

GOVERNMENT TO CALL CONFERENCE (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 27. Advice had recently been received from the Government that a meeting of local body members would shortly be held in Wellington to consider a national policy on war memorials, said Mr W. Kemp (Mayor of Masterton) at the Municipal Conference to-day when a Mosgiel remit urging the Government to make a pronouncement on the question and to give an indication as to what subsidies would be paid was being considered by the conference.

“My council will not accept a penny subsidy from the Government on Avar memorials,” said Mr E. R. Neale (Mayor of Nelson), amid applause. The remit was adopted on a show of hands, as was another remit by Mosgiel asking the Government to indicate what financial assistance might be expected for the establishment of community centres. Several delegates said that community centres were being considered as war memorials.
