IMMIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA (Rec. 1.15 p.m.) HOBART, This Day. Plana for free passages to Australia for British ex-servicemen and their dependants and assisted passages for British civilians will be announced in London and Canberra in a few days. Tlie Minister for Immigration, Mr A. A. Caldwell said in Launcheston that the Commonwealth’s immigration scheme at present provided for 70,000 immigrants a year. Three great difficulties to be overcome were shipping shortages, the rehabilitation of Australian ex-servicemen and women and the pro/ision of 400,000 houses already needed in Australia.
