BRAVED BOMBLOAD
A COURAGEOUS W.A.A.F. LONDON. A very brave girl, 21-year-old Leading Aircraftwoman Phyllis Day, of Cody-close, Kenton, Harrow, was on duty with other Waafs at a Fighter Command South Coast airfield when a Fortress made an emergency landing in fog, crashed into another plane, and burst into flames.
Phyllis raced through the l’og in her jeep. She flashed a message hack to Control by portable radio, asking for crash tenders and medical help. She then directed rescue operations until they arrived.
Ammunition was exploding, and the blazing Fort’s bombs seemed likely to go off at any moment. The airmen urged Phyllis to stand clear.
She did nothing of the sort. She worked at her little radio in the jeep —calling for further help as needed.
