UNNAMED PEAK
CLIMBED BY ASHBURTON PARTY
A successful ascent of an unnamed peak of 7044 ft. in the Arrowsmifn range at the head of the Cameron river, was made by Messrs W. H. Vaughen, D. Gordon, A. White (of the staff of the Ashburton Technical High School), and A. Dixon (Barrhill) before Christmas.
The approach was made through the Ashburton Gorge to the Cameron river, which drains into Lake Heron. From their base camp, the climbers proceeded up steep snowgrass slopes and a. snow basin on to a rock ridge which led to the summit from which a magnificent view was obtained as far south as Mount Cook, which stood out in hold relief against a clear blue sky, and westward to Mount Evans on the West Coast. The panorama included all the major intervening peaks. The ascent took five 'hours with little more than half that time to return to the base camp. The party also paid a visit to the Ashburton Glacier.
