FIVE KILLED

STORMS IN PORTUGAL ft (Rec. 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 21. Storms which swept Portugal in the last few days killed five and injured and made homeless several hundreds, reports the correspondent of the Associated Press at Lisbon. Violent cyclones are still gripping the country and the lower districts round Lisbon are under water. An earth tremor was reported from several points and the epicentre is believed to he about 175 miles from the coast.

Threat From Mines The gale which swept the United Kingdom in the last few days continues unabated, holding up shipping ill the Channel, washing up mines and flooding roads and railways. Lookouts spotted four mines simultaneously drifting past the Folkstone Harbour. Many others were washed up on the beach between Dungeness and Hastings. Rain washed away ballast, from the West England railway, necessitating the diversion of some trains.
