Mr E. C. Bathurst was appointed by the Mid-Canterbury Patriotic Zone Committee yesterday as its representative on the committee of the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council.
Mr J. de Lambert, Public Works assistant engineer at Lake Tekapo, has been admitted as an Associate Member of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers.
Mr C. J. Brooks, representative of the Labour Department in Ashburton, is on annual leave, until January 14. Constable B. J. McEwen is attending to his duties during his absence.
W. H, Dalton, Ashburton, was successful in passing Book-keeping and Accounts 111 in examinations conducted by the New Zealand University, thus completing his accountancy professional examinations.
‘ r. Kermode, N. McKee, A. Thomas and R. Walkham, all of the Ashburton Technical High School, were successful in the preliminary grade of the New Zealand Technological Examinations for Carpentry and Joinery.
Mr C. D. Wilson, who yesterday relinquished the position of assistant Town Clerk at Ashburton to take up his duties as Town Clerk at Motueka, was presented with an ink stand by the Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) on behalf of the staff.
The appointment of Dr. J. P. Walsh, M. 8., B.S. (Melb.), B.D.Sc.,' L.D.S. (Viet.), D.D.Sc., to the chair of dentistry at the University of Otago has been approved by the university council. The appointment was made necessary by the resignation of Dr. R. B. Dodds. —P.A.
Mr K. Hunter, who lias lately been discharged from the Royal New Zealand Air Force, will take up his duties as teacher in general subjects at the Ashburton Borough School in February. Mr Hunter, who is from Christchurch, has lately been taking a refresher course at the Ashburton High School.
Miss H. Hill, who has left the Ashburton office of the Public Trust to be married, Ava 9 yesterday met by the staff, on whose behalf the manager (Mr O. G. Robinson) made her a presentation. Mr Robinson made eulogistic reference to the ability of Miss Hill, stating that she was one of the ablest officers to have worked with the branch for some time.
The appointment of Captain D. A. Bingley, 0.8. E., R.N., to the command of the Auckland Naval District as Naval Officer in Charge and Captain Superintendent has been announced. The new appointment will take effect from January 7' Captain Bingley succeeds Commodore W. K. D. Dowding, D.S.C., R.N., whose tour of duty in New Zealand has expired. He will return to Britain early next year. Captain Bingley served n the Royal Navy in the First World War. Upon his retirement from the Navy he came to New Zealand to live, and was farming in the Auckland district viien the second world war broke put. He was then appointed captain in charge of the Devonport Naval Dockyard.P.A.
