PITCHED BATTLE
POLICE AND GANGSTERS (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec IS. British military police fought a pitched battle with revolvers 'and Sten guns in Dusseldorf to-day when rounding up a gang of German youths who have been terrorising the district by raiding farms and staging hold-ups. There were no casualties among the police, but several gangsters were wounded. About 20 arrests were made.
Fighting started when 14 gangsters firing pistols came out of one of the gang’s hide-outs after it had been cordoned off by a force of 350 military police and German civil police. They were eventually overpowered and arrested. The police then moved to another ]uni.se where the ringleaders were thought to be. About half-a-dozen gangsters raced out of this house with smoking guns. One who broke through the police cordon was chased four' miles aeross-country by a military policeman. During the chase the gangster mounted the footplate of the engine of a passing train and continued firing from there until he was eventually wounded and arrested.
