SHOPPING HOURS
HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS CLOSED DAYS VARY Most retail shops in Ashburton, including grocers and members of the Ashburton branch of the Drapers’ Clothiers’ and Boot Retailers’ Federation, will be open until 9 p.rn. next Friday, and until noon on Saturday. On Monday, Christmas Eve, they will remain open until 10 p.m. They will be closed on Tuesday (Christmas Day), and Wednesday (Boxing Day). The hours on the Thursday and Friday will be from 9 a.m. until 5.30 p.m., and the shops will not be open on the Saturday which is the first day the Saturday morning closing will be observed in Ashburton.
On Monday, New Year’s Eve, the shops will close at 5.30 p.m. and will re-open the following Wednesday. Late night will be observed as usual on Friday, January 4. Butchers and bakers will be closed on the Tuesday and Wednesday at both Christmas and New Year. Neither trade has yet reached any definite agreement about closing on Saturday mornings. A baker, however, remarked this morning that people might not like having to eat Friday’s bread on Monday morning. Hairdressers and tobacconists will close at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve until January 3. They will close on Saturday mornings as from January 5. Stock and station agents and similar firms will be closed next Saturday, but- will be open on Monday, Christmas Eve. They will close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and open the following Thursday and Friday, after which they will remain closed until Thursday, January 3.
