TEMPERANCE UNION
SATISFACTORY YEAR REVIEWED CREDIT BALANCE SHOWN Satisfaction was expressed when the treasurer (Mrs G. Tulloch), in her report to the annual meeting of the Ashburton Women’s Christian Temperance Union, said that income at £32 9s lid exceeded expenditure by £6 L9s 6d. Bhe was complimented on the manner in which she had managed the funds. A very full report was submitted on activities during the year under review. The president (Mrs W. H. Robinson) opened the meeting with devotions. Letters were directed to sick and elderly members. •Tlie temperance fact, given by Mrs Rooke, was as follows: “Tests have been made with typists, printers, signallers and others; they have been given small quantities of alcohol, and it is found that every time they take it they work slower and make more mistakes than when they are without it.” Mrs Robinson thanked members for their co-operation during her long term as president, and expressed regret that she could not continue in that office. Appreciation of the services of Mrs Robinson, and of Miss Watson, who lias been White Ribbon agent for 19 years, was recorded. It was stated that a minister from the North Island who was in Ashburton during the victory celebrations commented very favourably on the orderly manner in which the festivities were carried on, attributing this to the absence of bar facilities, which, he said, resulted only in littering the street with broken glass.
