CHARGES FOR WATER

FARMERS SEEK FINALITY IRRIGATION PROBLEM In an endeavour to settle the question of charges, for water for irrigation, the Ashburton County. Irrigation Development Association decided at a meeting at Winchmore last evening to again take the matter up with the Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple). It was pointed out .that the annual charges had been quoted at 6s an aere for a 24-inch spread of water, but as the accounts had not. yet been sent out, it was assumed that the final price was still under consideration. Mr Semple had given farmers a sypma•thetic hearing on previous occasions and had promised to confer with the Irrigation Development Association before making final arrangements op the subject, it was stated. Mr G. Calder, of the Ashburton office of the Department of Agriculture, gave an address on pastures. A blackboard demonstration of methods of irrigating open pasture land was given by Mr O. D. Riddell.
