NAVAL AIRCRAFT

FLIGHT OVER ASHBURTON DISPLAY OF AEROBATICS The vantage points on roofs and at upper storey windows were taken up long before the arrival of tile naval aircraft from the carrier Indefatigable over Ashburton this morning. , The planes were scheduled to arrive at 9.15, but were about half an hour late. As soon as their approach was heralded by the roar of aero engines, the streets filled like magic. The first time over the town, the planes—Seafires (the naval equivalent of the famous Spitfire), Fairey Firefly reconnaissance fighters and Grumman Avenger torpedo-bombers—were fairly high. There were 15 aircraft, the leading planes being .six Seafires (four in box formation). These -were followed by five Fireflies and four bombers brought up the rear. As the planes passed over Ashburton, two Seafires ‘‘peeled off” and gave a brief display of aerobatics, the principal feature of which was a series of upward rolls. They rejoined the formation when it passed over the town the second time, flying this time at about 200 ft.
