CANADIAN WHEAT
AVERAGE LANDED COST (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 4. Replying in the House of Representatives to-day to an urgent question on the landed cost of imported Canadian wheat and the price a bushel paid in Canada, asked by Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition, Hurunui) in conjunction with Mr W. A. Bodkin (Opposition, Central Otago), the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) said, the landed costs of Canadian wheat had varied according to quality, and whether shipments were partly in bulk or all bagged. Landed costs into New Zealand for individual shipments had ranged from lls 4d a bushel (bulk) to 12s fid (bagged). It was considered that 12s a. bushel would be a fair average of the landed cost. A total of 75,500 tons was received under mutual aid at no cost to the Dominion, and this quantity represented more than half of the 140,000 tons ordered from Canada. It would be seen, said Mr Sullivan, that the average landed cost, including the quantity received under mutual aid, would be something less than (is a bushel. Concerning the price a bushel paid in Canada, the f.o.b. price to New Zealand had varied, but mostly had been about 8s 9d a bushel (New Zealand currency).’ It was understood that the Canadian wheat grower received about 7s (New Zealand currency).
