CHILDREN’S CLOTHES

THANKS FROM HOLLAND GIFT TO THE ORPHANAGE Couched in slightly quaint English, a letter expressing thanks for garments for children has been received by the chairwoman of the Willowby sub-branch of the Red Cross' Society from the directress of an orphanage for girls and boys at the Hague (Holland). The frocks were originally intended for devastated areas of Britain, but were diverted by the Red Cross authorities there. The letter states that toward the end of 1942 the orphanage was evacuated to Scheveningen, near the German border, and not far from Arnhem, where the British air-borne troop;? fought so gallantly in September of last year. In October a year ago the temporary quarters there were bombed by the Americans in an attack on a railway bridge. Two direct hits destroyed the building. For a while the children had a terrible time, being right in the middle of a battle-field. They slept in cow-liouses, pig styes and hay-sheds. During the bombardment which preceded the liberation of the area by the Canadians, the place where the children wtre living was set on fire by the Germans, and they lost all their blankets, sheets, towels and clothing.
