CROQUET CLUB SILVER JUBILEE The silver jubilee of the Methven Croquet Chib was held on the, lawns on Saturday. Mrs A. H. Sandrey (president) welcomed a large attendance of members, ex-members, and representatives from Rakaia, Ashburton, Allenton and the South Canterbury Executive, and also the Methven Bowling Club. Early in _the afternoon competitions were played on the lawns, after which over 80 guests sat down to the banquet in the pavilion. The speakers were Mesdames A. H. Sandrey, H. G. Ayers, M. C. Milne, R. Morgan, A. Paddy, A. Guthrie and A. G. Rawlinson (Methven), H. Allchurch (Timaru), H. Fryer (Christchurch), E. C. Bathurst and H. Cleary (Ashburton), and Messrs J. Adams (Methven), V. Keav (Timaru) and E. C. Bathurst (Ashburton). The weather, which had been overcast, turned to rain, and the rest of the day was spent in indoor competitions. ' An amusing interlude was created by Mesdames Mangin, Morgan, Walker and Rawlinson appearing in frocks of a past era and playing with antique mallets. Competitions resulted: Peeling, Miss E. L. Morgan (Timaru); split shot, Miss M. Osborn (Allenton) croquet in the rain, Mr ;V. Keay (Timaru); fourball, Mr V. Keay; guessing articles, Mrs O. W. iSymes (Methven); parts of the body, Mrs E. C. Bathurst (Allenton) ; girls ’names, Mrs W. H. Walker (Methven).
Weather for November The following are the meteorological observations for the month of November as recorded by Mr James Carr, “Rudstone,” Methven. Rain fell on eight days, the maximum fall on any one day being 3G points on the 4th. The total for the month was 1.19 inches, compared with 4.42 inches last year. The average for November* for the last 37 years is 3.35 inches. The wettest November during that period was in 1936, when 6.86 inches fell, and the driest was in 1945, with only 1.19 points. The total for this year to date is 53.22 inches, while for the same period last year the fall was 40.70 inches. The highest value of the barometer last month was 1022.0 millibars on the 18th (1015.6 last year), and the lowest value 997.6 on the 22nd (995.9). The highest reading of the maximum thermometer was 77.4 on the 26th (73.8), and the lowest reading of the minimum thermometer 37.0 on the 3rd (33.8). The lowest on the grass was 24.6 on the 3rd (21.0). The range of temperature was 22.0 (17.4), the average mean temperature 57.0 (53.6). Frosts were recorded on 6 days (4), hours of bright sunshine 254.7 (217.5), miles of wind, 3191 (2376); evaporation, 6.635 inches (4.796).
