HOUSE BUILDING

STEADY INCREASE SHOWN ' FIGURES FOR ASHBURTON Interesting figures showing the growth of the residential area of Ashburton have been supplied by the Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major). They show that in 1939, after the inclusion of Allenton in the Borough, it was estimated that there were 1750 houses in the town and that by last March the figure had risen to 1900. The estimated totals for the years from 1939 to 1945 inclusive are 1750, 1800, 1860, 1880, 1890, 1895, 1900. These figures show a sceady increase, tapered, however, by the building restrictions during the war. The figures for 1945 do not include dwellings built since March. A substantial increase in the building of houses after that month should be shown by the end of the year because of the issue of 47 permits to date for housing construction since April, in addition, contracts Avere let for 33 State houses at Allenton.
