APPEAL FOR REPRIEVE
JAPANESE PRINCE ARRESTED (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) TOKIO, Dec. 3. The Foreign Minister, Shugeru Yoshida, formally requested a reprieve for Prince Morimasa Nashimoto. Prince Nashimoto, in an interview, said: “I had nothing whatsoever to do with the war. I feel the same as you about Tojo. I was honorary chairman of various organisations for military arts, but others did the real work.” Proud and unapologetic, Field-Mar-shal Shunroku Hata, who was the Emperor’s chief aide-de-camp told the Press: “I will take responsibility for all operations while commander-in-chief in China. I expected this. I feel the responsibility of the war.”
Prince Nashimoto and Field-Marshal Hata were among the 59 prominent Japanese arrested as war crimes suspects on an order issued by General MacArthur.
