In spite of unfavourable weather the turnover at the Oaks Day fixture of the Canterbury Jockey Club on Saturday was £124,436 (win £55,266 10s, place £69,169) compared with £110,767 10s on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £13,668 10s. The weather was mainly fine, with, slight drizzle at times, and the attendance was 16,500. The totalistor handled £142,180. The investments for the two days were £281,802, compared with £105,986 at the last mid-spring meeting in 1941, an increase of £175,916. The Rangitikei Racing Club’s spring meeting was held in tine though muggy weather. The totalisator handled £34,697 10s, compared with £25,415 last year. There was a bad smash at the home turn in the Rangitikei Cup, when Don Mac, Kaitoa, arid Tavern Light fell, Don Mac breaking a leg and Kaitoa his back. An inquiry revealed that Don Mac, when moving out to make his ruft,, clipped the heels of Pink Bonnet. RESULTS FROM SYDNEY EASY WIN FOR TEMPLE CHIEF SYDNEY, Dec. 1. At Canterbury Park the Summer Handicap, of one mile three furlongs, resulted: —Nightbeam 8.10 (Wheaie) 1, Wellesley S.G 2, Thanks America 7.2 3. There were five starters. Half a lengths; three lengths. Time, 2.24. At Mentone the Ascot Cup resulted; Temple Chief 8.7 (Heather) 1, Logical 8.7 2, Space 7.7 3. There were eight starters, including Stenelaus. Ten lengths; one. Time, 2.492. After Temple Chief had run away

with the Ascot Cup the stewards questioned the riders of each of the seven other runners. All were interrogated separately and the stewards refused to disclose the nature of the questioning. The inquiry has been adjourned. The race was described as a farce: Temple Chief,' who had recently been racing in Tasmania, where he failed to win a race, cleared out with a lead of 10 lengths by the end of two furlongs, and at the half-mile he was 20 lengths in front, while the jockeys of the other horses were just sitting on their mounts. Temple Chief was eased up from the straight entrance to win by 10 lengths.
