FRENCH SUCCESS
FIG’HT AGAINST ANNAMESE (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) SAIGON, Dec. 2. A column of French troops driving north west 160 miles from Saigon, captured the communications centre of Renmethot, reports a French communique. The French inflicted casualties on the nationalists and freed five French hostages, including three priests. The population gave the French troops a great welcome. The French authorities in Saigon report that Annamese nationalists burned down the Catholic mission at Longswiyen. They made French nuns prisoners and turned out Annamese nuns. French orphans Avere also taken prisoner, while of 100 Annamese orphans, all younger, are believed to have been burned to death. The older ones were taken prisoners. Longswiyen hospital was also burned down. The Japanese, who are responsible for its defence, adopted a passive attitude.
