BIG ADVANCE

LONG DISTANCE TELEVISION (Rec. 12.15) NEW YORK, Dec. 2. Long distance television was established successfully yesterday with a 240 miles broadcast between Philadelphia and New York City and Schenectady of the Army-Navy football match. It was the first time a visial broadcast had been made successfully over a distance greater than a few miles. Reception in New York generally was good, although at times it faded and the screen resembled a work-out at a movie. It is expected that television will operate regularly over 2000 miles between Washington and New York next month, and the service will be extended another 340 miles south to Charlotte in North Carolina by the end of next year. Long-range broadcasts are made possible by the use of a new type of coaxial cable and an image orthicon camera. The cable canalises the radio beam and amplifies it at intervals of about five miles with vacuum tubes. The cable h&s enough strands to carry 1 nearly 500 telephone calls, but it can accommodate only one television broadcast.
