POLICE GRIEVANCES
RESOLUTIONS AT AUCKLAND 40-HOUR WEEK SOUGHT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, December 2. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) and the Commissioner of Police (Mr J. Cummings) will be asked by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Police Association to visit Auckland to hear grievances of members concerning conditions in the Police Force. This decision was made at a meeting of the branch on Friday evening, when more than 150 members discussed reasons for discontent in the force. Figures produced at the meeting showed that since last January, 63 men in various parts of New Zealand had left the force, and only 21 had joined it. In addition, it was stated that many more resignations were pending. Considerable discussion centred on working time for both detectives and uniformed men. It was agreed that a 40-hour week should be instituted in •place of a 48-hour week, and that overtime should be paid at the rate of time-and-a-half and double time, according to the circumstances. It was also considered that overtime should be paid on statutory holidays.
