SAWMILLING INDUSTRY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. Discussing Christmas holidays for the sawmilling industry, the Commissioner of State Forests (the Hon. C. F. Skinner) said to-day that provision would be made by Gazette notice for a suspension of the directions requiring a 48-hour week to be worked in the industry, so that employers and workers might cease work for annual holidays. Mr Skinner said that employers and workers might cease work at any time after the usual closing time, December 19, resuming not later than January 10. “This does' not mean that all the period between the dates would he annual vacation,” said the Minister. “The position is that the holidays provided for in the Act and statutory holidays are enabled to be taken in this period, and the choice of actual 'dates will he a matter for arrangement, subject to the holidays beginning and ending within the period specified in the notice.” He added that it should be noted that no sawmill might close down for a period longer than 19 consecutive days. Any employer or worker who desired to cease work earlier or recommence later than the above dates had to apply for and receive the cousent of the regional timber controller.
