LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the "Guardian,” Dec. 1, 1895) Volunteers At Home—The weather was not favourable last night for the "camp fire” the volunteers intended to hold at the encampment. A thick, wetting drizzle began to fall late in the afternoon. An "at home” was held in the'drill shed instead. This attracted quite a crowd of the fair sex, as well as the volunteers who rolled up and enjoyed one of these evenings with which old volunteers are familiar. A highly enjoyable concert was given. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the "Guardian,” Dec. 1, 1920) Croquet Player Farewelled—A large number of the members and friends of the Ashburton Croquet Club assembled at the Club’s pavilion on Saturday afternoon to say au revoir to Mrs G. Raymond who has been a member for some years. Mrs T. J. Hunter, on presenting their guest with a brown suede bag, in a few words expressed the regret of croquet players at Mrs Raymond’s approaching departure from Ashburton, and wished her every happiness in her new home at Wellington.
