NATIONAL PARTY.

MEETING OF ASHBURTON BRANCH A well attended meeting of the Ashburton Branch of the New Zealand National Party was held in the Somerset lounge. Mr L. A. Charles (chairman) who presided spoke of the progress being made by the branch and dealt with some current questions in the political field. An interesting talk contrasting the philosophies of Capitalism and Socialism was given by Mr Vernon Thomas (divisional organiser). The speakers were thanked for their addresses. The Women’s Executive was i*esponsible for a most enjoyable programme after the business session, and also for beautiful floral decorations in the lounge and for supper. Contributing artists were Mesdames W. G. Todd and L. Cliff (solos), Miss J. Rattray (monologues), and the Misses P. and M. Cullen (pianoforte and ’cello solos). The accompanists were Mrs Todd and Miss P. Cullen. Mrs J. Russell Wells presented a shoulder spray to Miss A. M. Wall (proprietress of the Somerset Hotel) and thanked her for the generous use of the lounge and facilities. Hostesses responsible for the success of the evening were Mesdames Wells, L. A. Charles, R. Cairns, J. P. McLeod ahd Miss J. Rattray (secretary). Votes of thanks conveyed to the artists and the women’s committee were moved by Mr A. A. McDonald.
