WHEAT COMMITTEE.
FIRST WAR-TIME ELECTION
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day
For the first time in five years, an election of a United Wlieatgrowers’ electoral committee, the functions of which are practically those of a wheatgrowers’ parliament, will be held soon. Normally, half the members of the committee retire every second year, and an election is held; but because of war conditions no election has been held for five years. Accordingly, it has now been decided that the whole committee should retire so that wheatgrowers may have the opportunity to elect a complete committee and thus overcome to some extent the disability of not having had an election during the war years. .
Nominations for the committee will be sought shortly, the committee’s constitution being: North Island, two members; Marlborough, one; North Canterbury. 13; Mid-Canterbury, 13; North Otago, four; Otago, two; Southland, two. Retiring members, are among those eligible for nomination. If more nominations than are required for any district are received, an election will be held by postal ballot on September 10. It is expected that one of the first jobs of the new committee will be to discuss the 1946 area and price with representatives of the Economic Stabilisation Commission and of the Government.
