ART TREASURES.
« - - *MANY CACHES DISCOVERED. (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 1. Up to the last week no fewer than 580 caches containing looted art treaties and German works of art stored awpy from Allied bombing have been fofndfcr Germany, writes a correspondent at Supreme Allied Headquarters. f’heir contents ranged from huge accumulations of 3000 to 4000 cases concealed in the salt mines of Salzburg to smaller caches such as 20 cases of Flijftnißh primitive art which were discovered in a German farmyard. • Many caches have been found in German.,castle's, -one of which, bought Himmler, was furnished in grandi- . ose style with tapbstries and pictures. Lieutenant-Colonel Godfrey Webb, British chief of the mohuments of fine arts and archives section of Supreme Allied Heaquarters, stated on Friday th|t so many caches had been discovered that the number of Allied officers charged with the care of historical monuments and works of art had been increased. However, he considered that they* must be coming to the end of such discoveries. One-flfth of the world's art treasures had been unearthed in Germany, much of it looted from occupied countries. .
