DRINKING UTENSILS.

QUESTION OF STERILISATION . v j * • • A*. O' (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 1. Comments on the evidence given in Wellington concerning the sterilisation of drinking utensils by means of ultraviolet light w r ere made this morning at the sitting of the Licensing Commission by Dr. F. L. Maclean for the Director-General of Health. The, comments were contained in a "written document forwarded from Wellington. Ultra-violet rays, said Dr. Maclean, were capable of destroying bacteria, but there were certain factors which in practice limited their use. They had only slight penetrating powers and could not pass through ordinary glass. Water could be sterilised by ultraviolet rays only if it was clear and if it v/ns exposed to the rays in a thin sheet. Prolonged or frequent exposure to the rays was harmful to human, beings, particularly to the eyes. For the washing of eating and drinking utensils both hand and mechanical washing could give satisfactory results. It was the general opinion that brushing was necessary to clean glasses properly.,.
