OUTPUT OF COAL.

DECLINE IN BRITAIN. (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 28. There was a further decline of 5 per cent, in the output of deep-mined coal in Britain last year. This was disclosed in a statistical digest for 1944 published by the Ministry of Fuel and Power. One per cent, of the total loss was accounted for by heavy dispute losses in the early part of the year. The production of open-cast coal was doubled in 1944. The labour force in the industry increased in 1944, mainly as file result of the ballot. This means that the industry now has an appreciable proportion of “green” labour, and to this must be attributed some part of the decline in the output per man shift.
