POSITION SERIOUS.
AUCKLAND GAS SUPPLY. > (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 27. The Auckland Gas Company’s coal supply will be exhausted to-morrow afternoon. Present indications are that there will be no gas after to-morrow night. There are no signs of immediate relief, and for several days at least Auckland is likely to be completely out of gas. Gas has b.een rationed for the last three days to eke out the supply as far as possible, and considerable difficulty has been experienced by housewives, hospitals, restaurants, and hotels. The suply in the meal-liour periods to-day was of indifferent quality. The next boat expected from the West Coast is the Kiwitea. Because of stormy conditions, the vessel is not expected to leave Greymouth within the next three days.
The general manager of the company (Mr R. Worley) said the position was worse than it had ever been previously. On other occasions, something had occurred just in time to prevent a complete cessation of the supply, but this time there appeared to be no hope at all.
