WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
THE ASHBURTON DISTRICT. An interesting address on her experiences in mission work in India was given by Mrs I. Ax’gyle at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute yesterday afternoon. A large variety of articles, including Avork by Indian girls, Avas on display. A hearty vote of thanks, moved by Miss M, McDowell, Avas accorded Mrs Argyle. Support for the Victory Loan Avas appealed for by Messrs E. C. Bathurst and K. Mann. Several members volunteered to sell bonds. Stall-holders were appointed for the Patriotic Street Day arranged by the Institute for August 3. It was decided that the Arts and Crafts Circle, under Mesdames L. L. Aitken and E. Loftus, and the Drama Circle, under Mrs J. Roffey, be carried on during the winter months. The arrangement of items for the Eisteddfod, to be held by the Federation in September, was left to Mrs Roffey and Miss L. Watt. Competitions resulted: —Embroidered d’oyley, Mrs E. A. Amos 1, Mrs R. Cairns 2, Mrs Loftus 3; eggless ginger cake, Mrs J. Clark 1, Mrs R. J. Preston 2, Mrs Amos 3; large flower, Mrs Cairns 1, Mrs W. A. Johnstone 2, Mrs Preston 3; small floAver, Mrs Cairns 1, Mrs Sedcole 2, Mrs Aitken 3; chrysanthemums, Mi’s Cairns 1, Mrs Clark 2, Mrs Johnstone 3. The president (Mrs L. Ruddock) ■presided over a good attendance.
' LOWCLIFFE MEETING. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the I.owcliffe Women’s Institute/ over which Mrs Cross presided. A letter of thanks for a parcel was received from a local serviceman. It was decided to denote G2 to Ihe Mid-Canterbury Federation. The birthday party, to lake the form of a social afternoon in the school, will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 9. A letter of thanks for contributions to the Leper Fund was received from Mr P. «T. Twomey—“Leper Man. ’ Competitions resulted: Knitting, Mrs Cross and Mrs Reddecliffe equal 1 Miss Tait 3, Mrs Smyth 4; sewing. Miss J.. Reddecliffe 1. Mrs Price 2; bottled pears. Miss Tait 1. Mrs Cross 2, Mrs Smith and Mrs Price equal 3. Flowers, bloom. Mrs Smyth ; cluster, Mrs G l'oss; spike, Mrs Hawke. A demonstration in tatting was given by Miss McKee and Miss Tait.
