GAMING OFFENCE.
LABOURER FINED £SO. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. Stephen James Buzan, labourer, aged 38, was fined £SO anti costs, in default three months’ imprisonment, when he appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., at a special sitting of the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon and pleaded guilty to using premises in Whitmore Street as a common gaming house. Detective N. Thompson said that lie and Detective G. Altv visited the premises at 2.30 this afternoon and found Buzan there. He admitted he was taking bets. There was a telephone in the living room and it was ringing while the detectives were there. The total betting amounted to £lO9 -Is Cd on various races throughout the Dominion. Nothing was known previously against Buzan. Buzan told the Magistrate that, lie was only in a small way. Mr Levvey: £IOO in an afternoon. That’s not so very small, is it? As you are a first offender, £SO and costs, in default three months’ imprisonment.
