THE WEATHER.
FINE MISTY RAIN TO-DAY. A fine fog which enveloped Ashburton early this morning, later thickened to a fine misty drizzle, which continued throughout the day. Showers fell yesterday morning, but the greater part of the day was fine, with a clouded sky and rather fresh atmosphere. The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 57.3 and 51.2 degrees, compared with 53.5 and 44.6 on Saturday. The barometer to-day registered 30.05 inches, against 30.02 yesterday. THE MONTH AT ASHBURTON. A month of pleasant weather, with a few rather chilly clays, was experienced at Ashburton in March. The first frosts of the season, one of 1.4 degrees on the 21st and the other of one degree on tho 2Gtli, were a reminder that winter is approaching. Two hailstorms were experienced in the town, little damage being clone in the country districts where scattered hail also fell. On Sunday afternoon, March 11, the first storm struck Ashburton and on Saturday afternoon a week later, the second, accompanied by thunder and lightning was experienced. North-west winds kept tho temperatures moderate, the warmest, day being the 23rd, when the thermometer registered 81.9 degrees. On the hottest day in March last year the temperature was 79.1 degrees. The lowest temperature at. night was 35.7 degrees on Thursday. Rain totalled 2.22 inches, compared with 1.56 inches in the previous March, and 1.88 in March, 1943. Heaviest falls were of 57 points on the ISth and 28th. TO-DAY’S FORECAST*. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the follojving statement regarding the weather: — General situation: An anticyclone is centred over the North Island. An extensive depression is in the Tasman The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 5 p.m. to-morrow is as follows: — , ... Light to moderate and variable winds, easterly directions predominating Weather overcast, with scattered drizzle, or rain, becoming more general and heavier to-morrow, reinperatures cool. Further outlook: Probably continuing unsettled.
