“REP.” CRICKET.

ASHBURTON v. WEST COAST. A CLOSE FINISH. When stumps were drawn in the representative cricket match between Ashburton and West Coast at the Domain on Saturday, Ashburton had made the respectable total of 197 runs for the loss of eight wickets. The opening pair for Ashburton were N. Jones and ,T. Doig. The former was cheaply dismissed by A. Knapp, but Doig went on to make .103 in a moderately aggressive innings which included 11 fours. With the fall of Jones’ wicket, Doig was joined by his brother, B. Doig, who made the next best score of 56. H. Cook, whose tally was IS, was batting in promising style when his wicket fell to an lbw appeal by R. Frew. The latter Ashburton batsmen were dismissed fairly cheaply owing to the failing light. Play continued this morning in heavy drizzle, which made the out-field very slow and the wicket dead. The bowlers were hampered by a wet and greasy ball.

West Coast went in after Ashburton had lost the last two wickets, by Frew, Coast’s slow bowler, making two for 7.

Duffield and Thomas opened for Coast, the former’s wicket falling very early. Duffield ivas followed by Meates who scored a brilliant 25. Blair made a good stand, with Frew, for an hour and 20 minutes, with 21 runs to his credit.

R. Frew was the star member of the West Coast team, making Cl runs. The only batsmen of the Ashburton team to give like service were J. Doig, who almost doubled it with 103 and B. Doig who made 56. Toward the end of the match, to the bowling of Kerr, Frew hit the first six of the day. This was followed shortly after by another six by the same batsman off J. Doig’s bowling. With a quarter of an hour to play West Coast needed 29 runs to win. Following are the scores: Ashburton. First Innings. N. Jones, b Knapp .. .. .. 1 J. Doig, b Westwood .. . - 103 B. Doig, bK.
