ANOTHER LANDING.

AMERICANS IN RYUKYU GROUP. VERY LARGE FORCES ENGAGED. (Ree 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April 1. American troops to-day landed on Okinawa, the main island in the Ryukyu group. 620 miles from Japan. Announcing the landing, ‘which followed a 10-day assault on Ryukyu,s by British and American task forces. Admiral Nimit/, said it was the largest amphibious operation of the Pacific war.

The communique also says that the Kerama Islands, also in the Ryukvus and just, off the south-west coast of Okinawa, were captured last Monday. Heavy artillery is now emplaced on Kerama and is being used to support the attack on Okinawa. The operation is proceeding according to plan. Troops went ashore at 8.30 a.m. and advanced rapidly inland. By 11 a.m. they had captured Yontan and Kadena airports, with light losses. The communique discloses that the United States 10th Army, including the 24th Army Corps and the Marine 3rd Amphibious Corps, took part in the invasion of Okinawa. The landings wore supported bv the United Slates 6th Fleet.

Vice-Admiral Rowling's carrier force (British) also bombarded enemy positions in the Sakishima group. One thousand four hundred ships are taking part, and correspondents at Guam estimate that 100.000 troops are involved
