SHIPPING BOMBED.
OFF COAST OF NORWAY. SHORE INSTALLATIONS DAMAGED (Rec. 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, April 1. Carrier-borne aircraft of the Royal Navy, operating with ships of the Home Fleet, under command of RearAdmiral R. R. McGrigor, C. 8., D. 5.0., flying his flag in the escort carrier H.M.S. Searcher, again struck tit enemy shipping off the coast of Norway states an Admiralty communique. In spite of unfavourable weather the Navy aircraft, flown from Searcher and the escort carriers, H.M.S. Queen, H.M.S. Nairana, H.M.S. Puncher made a series of raids covering Trondheim, Leads, and the Aaalsemul area. Although few enemy vessels were encountered hits were obtained on a medium-sized tanker and an escort vessel.
Shipping in the anchorage of Aalseuncl was also successfully attacked.
Enemy anti-aieraft batteries in these areas were attacked and silenced, and important shore installations in Viltero Island were severely damaged.
Three Messerschmitt 100 G. aircraft which attempted to interfere in these operations were destroyed by Wildcat aircraft.
Neither damage nor casualties was sustained by His Majesty’s ships or aircraft. —British Official Wireless.
