CANTERBURY MUSEUM.

PROPOSALS FOR MAINTENANCE. ! RATING ON LOCAL BODIES. The proposal from the Canterbury University College to rate local bodies for the upkeep of the Canterbury Museum was considered by the County Council to-day. It was decided to obtain further information before making a decision. “We have some duty to maintain the museum, but in view of our distance from Christchurch it is difficult to decide how much we should contribute,” said Mr J. Carr. “If we agreed to 'their proposals we should be committing the ratepayers to the expenditure of another £(400 a year.” The chairman (Mr H. C. 8.-Withell) * We send the children from our schools to the museum regularly, Mr M. S. Turton said the Council should not commit itself to spending another £ 400 a year without obtaining more information. Admittedly the museum was a national need, but: it would be a good idea to see what other counties were doing. if the Council doubled the proposed contribution of £GS from the Borough Council it would be doing better than that body, because it had not twice the population of the borough, said Mi J. Carr.
