POWER BOATS ON LAKE
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY PROTESTS. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society AA r as held last evening Avhen there Avere present Messrs J. Donn (chairman), W. H. Sarney, A. J. Millicliamp, A. Cates, E. R. Easterbrook, G. A. Read, J. Palmer and G. Kelly. The chairman reported that members of the Council had interviewed Mr Urquhart, of Lake Heron, Avho had stated that he had no objection to anglers using the camping ground at the lake provided they obtained permission. Mr A. Henderson Avas appointed caretaker at Hakatere for approximately six weeks during the holiday period. The North Canterbury Society Avrote expressing appreciation to the council and staff of the Ashburton Society for the excellent work accomplished in the propagation and release of its Society’s rainbow fry. The use of poAver boats on lakes in the district Avas discussed and it was decided to take the necessary action to prohibit" them on all lakes. The use of these boats on Lake Heron is already prohibited. It Avas also decided that notices be erected at the various j lakes notifying the restrictions applic-j able to each lake. The Ranger’s report disclosed that shag rookeries at the Rangitata, Ashburton and Rakaia Rivers had been shot out. Reports were received concerning the depredations made on small fish in the local rivers by the bird com- j monly known as the little gull. It Avas j stated that these birds were taking a i large number of young trout not only i in the riA-ers but also in some of the back country lakes. 1
