JAPANESE CLAIM VICTORY. THE ACTION OFF FORMOSA. NEW YORK, Oct. IG. The Tokio radio claimed that Japanese planes intercepted and attacked American carrier forces sent to Manila in a diversionary attempt to rescue the enemy task force now fleeing tiom Formosa. The radio claimed that the Japanese naval victory set back the impending invasion of the Philippines by at, least two months. Meanwhile, added the radio, the Japanese people are wildly celebrating the victory in the Formosa Sea, which has made the actions of Hawaii a.nd Malaya appear sideshows' and which are comparable to the defeat of the Russian Fleet in 1905. ' The Prime Minister (General Koiso) in a message to the nation said: The enemy offensive against the Philippines has been dealt a sledge hammei blow. The long-awaited opportunity for Japan’s Pacific battle has arrived. Our torpedo planes and Navy Air Force
shoAved their mettle in the present action.” The Associated Press says that the claims of victory in various jubilant Japanese broadcasts varied from 42 to •52 American warships sunk or damaged. I
